Schedule for Friday June 19, 2009

Posted 06-19-2009 at 08:26 AM by BoysStateBlogger (Massachusetts Boys State Blog)
We check out of Stonehill late morning. At 8:30 am, Boys Staters will attend the annual Boys State College Fair, followed by closing ceremonies at 10:00 - 11:00 am. From there, towns will convene for one final municipal meeting to hand out certificates and hand in keys, and all business should be complete around 11:30 am.

We still have hundreds of photos and dozens of video clips to post and will do that over the weekend and in the coming weeks.

Blog Updates - Evening of June 17, 2009

Posted 06-17-2009 at 07:34 PM by BoysStateBlogger (Massachusetts Boys State Blog)
Updated 06-17-2009 at 07:38 PM by BoysStateBlogger
It will be difficult to update the blog this evening, but we will have a live broadcast of Candidates Forum, and a live blog/chat session. Guests are welcome to participate, and there is no sign-up or registration required.

After Candidates Forum, there is a senior staff meeting, so no one will be available to do updates, but I expect we will have a good load of video and photos to upload tomorrow.

For some reason I didn't get a copy of the third installment of the Citizen. If I can get my hands on that, I'll post it up.

Stanton v. Smith, Docket No. 09-CV-??????

Posted 06-17-2009 at 03:16 PM by BoysStateBlogger (Massachusetts Boys State Blog)
Updated 06-17-2009 at 07:21 PM by BoysStateBlogger
So, we looked at the case of Jack Stanton vs. Bruce Jackson, Director of Boys State Elections in this blog item.

(UPDATED - 7:20 pm)

Mr. Stanton plods on.

In his earlier ruling, Judge Snyder did not address the issue of Mr. Stanton's request for a slot in the program for the Wednesday evening Candidates' Forum. He intends to mount a write-in campaign, but would also like an opportunity to address the voters at the Forum.

Judge Snyder ruled that...

T-6 Counselor John Brady

Posted 06-17-2009 at 03:04 PM by BoysStateBlogger (Massachusetts Boys State Blog)
Updated 06-17-2009 at 03:21 PM by BoysStateBlogger
John Brady has been on staff at Boys State for 20 years. He coordinates the Samsung Scholarship, the College Fair, and a host of other events throughout the week. He's also the lead counselor of T-6, and has been for 15 or so years.

In his non-Boys State time, John works for the College Board, and resides in New Jersey. We interrupted his breakfast to ask a few questions.

Read about Stanton v. Jackson in the June 17, 2009 edition of The Citizen.

So, Jack Stanton underwent the process to mount an independent candidacy for United States Senator. He consulted with Bruce Jackson, Director of Elections at Massachusetts Boys State and was provided the proper form for obtaining the necessary 50 signatures to have his name inserted onto the ballot as an independent candidate. He submitted the document to Mr. Jackson within the prescribed time.

Max

Posted 06-17-2009 at 06:29 AM by BoysStateBlogger (Massachusetts Boys State Blog)
Updated 06-17-2009 at 06:46 AM by BoysStateBlogger
This was an interesting find. Yesterday, about 20 minutes before party conventions, I walked into the Federalist Party Convention Hall and came across Max. Max is a candidate for Lt. Governor, seeking the nomination from the Federalist Party. He was alone in the hall, practicing his speech to empty seats, and very much rapt with the notion that, if he did well, he could actually win the thing.

So, I took three clips. The first is where I interrupted him alone in the hall. ...

Tons and tons of photos

Posted 06-16-2009 at 04:44 PM by BoysStateBlogger (Massachusetts Boys State Blog)
Boys State counselor for nearly three decades, Bob Ryan, sent a link to photos that he took at the opening assembly (6/13) and Alumni Night (6/15).

I'll try to go through these and post one from every group photo, but that may take a little time.

A note from a friend. . . .

Posted 06-16-2009 at 04:23 PM by BoysStateBlogger (Massachusetts Boys State Blog)
Updated 06-16-2009 at 04:31 PM by BoysStateBlogger
I received this note through the blog messenging feature. This gentleman went to Boys State in 1985.

It was a good read. Thank you for sending it.

Quote:
I just wanted to say hello to you and all the folks at the program. This year, more than ever, I put many of the lessons learned at Boys' State to use in the real world, as I recently ran for (and won) re-election to the School Committee in my home town. Standing before my Boys' State town and party in 1985 campaigning

Soccer at Boys State

Posted 06-16-2009 at 03:28 PM by BoysStateBlogger (Massachusetts Boys State Blog)
If you read through any of the 2008 blog, you understand this blog's position on soccer. At best, it's an acceptable way to safely (sometimes) store 100,000 screaming soccer fans for a Sunday afternoon.

At Boys State, though, the risk of asking Andy and Liam to hold the video camera for a few hours is that they'll film soccer. And so they did.
